IMAP, the first program of it's kind, was created by the Mammal Technical Committee of the Pennsylvania Biological Survey (PaBS).

IMAP is a joint partnership of the National Wildlife Federation, PA Wildlife Federation, PA Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, Mammal Technical Committee/PA Biological Survey, and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.

When the pilot IMAP conservation plan is completed for Pennsylvania, the Important Mammal Areas Project will be rolled out nationally using it's model to protect critical mammal habitat throughout North America.
